The hardest part of teaching is not knowing whether or not your sacrifices will payoff. The first time we hosted the Don Raymond Relays, I got to hear the story of Don Raymond, all of his accolades, how he integrated sports and became the first African-American to earn All-State in Louisiana. I was so proud to carry on such a legacy for THIS track program. Tragically, Don Raymond died his junior year of high school. He never got to see Brittany Bonnaffons become head track coach. He never saw an African-American female win state teacher of the year (I am not the only one). He never saw Erica Lipscomb Randolph become the first female (who also happens to be African-American) become the first guys basketball coach in Louisiana. Because of him, I am. Because of him, we are. Someone needs to know that just because you don’t see it now doesn’t mean your sacrifices will not pay off. One day, someone will say those same words with you in mind. “Because of you, I AM.”

I’m trying to do better. I’m hoping to post daily over the summer to get some of this info off my phone, but we will see.
