3 Easy Natural Hair Styles for Kids

With school back in session, us mamas do not have much time daily to dedicate to styling our daughter’s natural hair. My daughter just started the second grade, and here are three easy natural hairstyles I use to ensure she looks great without me wasting hours of my life that I will never get back making that greatness happen.

1. Twist out

A twist out takes the most time out of the three styles up front I will mention, but after the original wash day is just as easy to maintain as the other two styles. During wash day, make sure you detangle the hair well and use a good moisture retention cream. Each evening, I do anywhere from 8-15 twists which takes about 10-15 minutes. In the morning, it takes less than 5 minutes to take down the twists and send my baby girl on her way.

2. Half puff

The second simple natural hairstyle for kids is the half puff. Some evenings my daughter (or I) fall asleep early, or we are just too tired to twist. Before school, I can easily re-wet the hair to allow for manipulation, brush the front into a puff, put some moisturizing cream on the hair to keep the curls looking fresh all day, and voila! My mini is good to go. (I will note here also that I DO NOT take the time to make a perfect part to separate the puff from the rest of the hair. I like the freedom of curls going their own directions in their natural state.)

3. Full head puff – high puff, low puff, two puffs

If the back of your child’s hair is uncooperative and will not allow for any form of being allowed to flow freely, the “puff” is always a win. My first go-to is the high puff where all the curls are stacked on top of the head (please be sure to detangle and not just throw the curls up there without any care). Sometimes, though, I switch it up a bit and pull the puff back low, or I take the time to part my mini’s natural hair and create an easy two puff look.

***

I know many people who do protective styles such as braids and twists in their children’s natural hair. Those styles are also wonderful for kids, but I have not yet perfected braiding as a mama so these are the easy styles I can create myself in a few minutes daily.

What recommendations do you have to simple curly hair styles for a momma who does not have tons of extra time?
