Summer is here! Pools are opening. Beaches are filling up. Vacations are under way.
You are trying to rock your best natural hair all summer long and help your little girl to do the same.
But you are sweating…and the kids are home…and chlorine…and traveling. None of these are making life easy for your curls or your daughter’s curls.
How can you ensure your summer hair stays healthy?
Summer Hair Hack 1
Protective Styles
Summer is the perfect time to find a professional to install box braids or faux locs (no longer than 6 to 8 weeks). Use your favorite hair care products to protect your hair before installation, continue to care for your hair while in the protective style (washing and moisturizing are still needed), and enjoy waking up day to day and leaving the house without having to mess with your hair.

If you do not have the funds or access to a braid technician, or, if you, like myself, are not yet comfortable allowing your daughter to rock feed in braids, twisted styles care also great for protecting naturally curly hair. They allow you anywhere from a few days to a few weeks without having to do any manipulation. They are great for beach days and vacays.

Wash, Moisturize, Repeat
Chlorine is a CHEMICAL. It kills the germs in pools, but it can also do significant damage to hair. If it goes into the hair, it must come out. Wash it. You may not under any circumstances let it stay in your curls or your daughter’s curls. Following your wash, you need ensure you follow-up with a good conditioner, and then lock in the moisture with a great oil/gel combination or an oil/cream combination.

Summer Natural Hair Hack 3
No More Perfect Curls
I love the look of a fresh twist out, or, in my daughter’s case, freshly washed and detangled curls.

Yet, perfect curls are not a requirement for your summer hair. Let your hair rest from the constant manipulation. Allow your curls to be free. It does not have to look like you have day 1 hair every day.
Summer is a time to let loose and live. Your summer hair should have that same freedom.

Thank you so much! I got the shirt from the lady who runs our Instagram Zoom Room. And we used a temporary dye from Walmart on my daughter’s hair.

I love the hacks. I’m usually so lazy to twist my hair coz it hurts, but I think it’s because I don’t moisturize quite as much.

Mz_Ola: someone told me that protective styles are to lock in moisture that is there. But if you add no moisture before the protective hairstyle, it will dry out even more. It is important to make sure you add enough moisture to have something to lock in! But I admit, those curls are quite the challenge for me too.
