When Nothing Goes Right, Go Left

“When nothing goes write, go left.”  – Unknown (Source)

If you could not already tell, I am a huge fan of quotes and all things positive thinking.  I feel like, life has tossed so many new dimensions at me that I have pushed away from who I am.  I have become bitter, angry, and withdrawn, and I refuse to let that shape me permanently.

As such, I will spend the last ten days of this National Blog Post Month redirecting my thoughts to all things positive.  I challenge you to do the same.  When I ran track, my mom sent me letters almost daily inspiring me and encouraging me.  She always possessed an intricate knowledge of positive thinking, and she ensured she shared this intricate knowledge with me.

The first rule of positive thinking: Whenever a negative thought enters your mind, replace that thought with a positive one.

I do not feel as though my life has nothing going right.  I do, on the other hand, feel as though I have not adjusted to the changes life politely dropped in my lap.  Off-balance would be my word of choice.  My adjustments created a short-tempered, frazzled woman who I do not love at all.  So God and I had a little talk (or a lot of talk), and I have decided to go back to what I know.  I have decided to return to normal.  I have decided to go left.

I highly recommend that you check out Aneesha’s latest post: What to Do When You’re Just Not Motivated.  Her words gave me just the push I needed to get back focused and moving in the right direction.

Here are my top three non-negotiable items to start off my ten days:

  1. Daily Devotion.  I have loaded the Bible app on my phone thanks to a friend I hold near and dear.  Currently I am working through a five day series called Find Joy in the Ordinary by Brittany Rust (a beautiful first name and title if I do say so myself).  Yet, I digress.  Today Brittany reminded me to “find the joy that endures the circumstances because the joy is in Him” (Day 2).  The more I talk and commune with my Best Friend, the more He calms my spirit, the more joy I experience even in the unexpected.
  2. Exercise.  I have never struggled with my weight.  However, the benefits of exercise extend much beyond weight loss.  I recognize and accept the much appreciated power of endorphins. I also recognize and accept the much appreciated flat belly and ability to wear what I want, when I want, how I want.  My self-esteem could use the boost that exercise offers.
  3. “Me” time.  I know.  I have been down this street before.  The problem is that old habits sometimes fall by the wayside.  I do it.  I love it.  It changes my life.  I get busy.  I stop.  Life gets in the way.  I stress.  I have no time for “me.”  Bitter, angry Brittany surfaces.  Repeat.  Thankfully, my closest friends and family send me kind reminders that perhaps I need some time to myself.  I gracefully oblige.

So that’s it.  Day 1 in a nutshell.  I welcome anyone who would like to join me on this journey to left.  Any non-negotiables that any of you have, I welcome with open arms.  Any great devotions?  Any amazing blogs you’ve read?

  1. Great post, Brittany. Sometimes I think you are too hard on yourself because you are trying to be all things to all people. I hope you get the chance to recharge your batteries. What is non-negotiable to me is time with my family and my writing time. Those are things that I actively push for and do on a daily basis. Good luck with your 10 days left in the November challenge. You’ve got this! 🙂
