How to Get It Done

“Some days she has no idea how she’ll do it, but every single day it still gets done.” (Source)

I missed a day already in the National Blog Post Month. I wanted to post every day for the month of November. I talked to my mentor Chandra Lynn at Pics and Posts, and I hoped the accountability partner would help me to stay on track. However, life got in the way. I did not want to let quality suffer just to post something so yesterday evening after a LONG day and a great date night, I fell asleep as quickly as my head hit the pillow, fully clothed.

Yet, the question haunted me for the past 48 hours: If you could be completely honest with no regrets, what would you say and to whom?  I do not always agree that complete honesty is good.  Do not get me wrong, I believe in honesty.  I find honesty to be an endearing and absolutely necessary quality, but I am also a firm believer that “it is not what you say but how you say it” that matters…

…My son burst into tears the second day I dropped him off at the babysitter’s house.  After the live he has lived, I wanted to hold him forever.  I wanted to stay to convince him that I was coming back, but there was nothing I could say.  No amount of convincing could out outdo his personal life experience.  I would have to show him – day after day, for the rest of his life.  In that moment, I thought of all of the life lessons he needed to know immediately:

  1. Life is not fair.  Not everyone gets a fair shake.  Some have endured more in their first four years than other will ever endure in a lifetime.  Sometimes the deck is stacked against you, and you have got to learn to “play a poor hand well.”  Sometimes you will endure more rain than sunshine, more tears than laughter, more heartache than joy.  Sometimes the bad days do outweigh the good days, but whatever you do, keep moving forward – one foot in front of the other.  Eventually, you come out on the other side.
  2. Do NOT believe the hype.  I do not care what the hype is.  I do not care what the world tells you.  I do not care what you think you see that confirms the truth in “the hype.”  Your final destinations are paved with hard work, tears, and faith.  In order to get it done, whatever it may be, you make sacrifices – marriage, parenting, work. None of it is easy.  It does not come over night.  It does not come miraculously.  It takes time, patience, passion, and prayer.  The “hype” is only a small portion of it.
  3. You cannot do it alone.  In general, people DO NOT CARE.  You have a story, and your story is unbelievable.  What you had to endure to get here, the odds you overcame, are inexplicable.  You shocked yourself!  Most people, however, could not care less about the odds or what you had to overcome.  You must learn to recognize when you need to share your story and when you need to share in someone else’s story.  At times life is completely about you.  At times, life has nothing to do with you.  Regardless, you must recognize that those around you are instrumental into who you become.  Some people are the reason you wake up every morning.  Others are the reason you cannot sleep at night.  Some serve as role models for who you want to be.  Others serve as examples of who you never want to become.  Either way, whatever it is you are trying to do, requires assistance of those outside of yourself.  You are not an island.  It takes a village.
  4.  You will get through it, to it, or over it.  Some days you move mountains.  Some days you need to heal.  Some days you simply need to survive.  No matter the reason, you will hardly ever know “how to do it” as our opening quote so succinctly stated.  Thankfully, a simple conjunction follows the statement – “, but.”  I have heard some of my favorite sermons preached on the premise of that one familiar word…

   but God…

He will be the reason it gets done.

You will pout because life is not fair.  You will believe the hype.  You will rely on people who will let you down.  You will rely on people who will love you and have no idea how to help you.  And then you will rely on God.  Only then will it get done.  Only then will you get through it, to it, and over it.

What are some ways that you get it done?

  1. I always love your posts – they’re liking a grounding force. Where I’m irreverent, I enjoy your groundedness (if that’s even a word). Thank you.

      1. Well, I’d never guess you were anything other than beautifully human. Your perspective is nice, though. I bring the snorts of derision to the table – I’m a part of a family that plays Cards Against Humanity right after Thanksgiving for 3 hours with our 90 year old Great Aunt LOL

  2. There are times during the week when as you say, Brittany, life happens & I don’t get to write. It is frustrating but I know tomorrow is another day & another chance to put pen to paper. Right now, I am going through some difficulties but I will work through them with my support system. No matter what befalls me, I do what I need to do & move on. Thank you for your uplifting, thoughtful posts!

  3. These are very good life lessons. It’s great that you’re teaching your son all these as early as now. He’ll definitely grow up with more control over his experiences. 😊

  4. Man oh man!! This is a great a post and so very true!!

But God….is how I get things done as well. The way my mind is set up and the way my flesh is set up. But the way God and the Holy Spirit is set up overrides the moments I want to quit and/or not accomplish a simple task.

  5. I think the best way to get IT done is to ask God to show you all the “its” that I’m supposed to do for the day in the order in which I should do them. If I’m abiding in Him and following His leading step by step, I somehow manage to get more done than I could have imagined. Planning things out of His direction or wasting emotional energy on fretting – that’s a good way to derail the “it” train.
