When You’ve Got Nothing Left – Managing Transition in Life

This is the first year I have ever truly embraced fall. Historically, I could live with or without it. Living in the south, much of the transition to winter is subtle and does not actually take place until winter is in full swing. The temperature is still in the 80s and 90s. Occasionally, I consider wearing a jacket outside in the morning, but I quickly dismiss the notion recognizing that even if the temperature stays as is, as warm-blooded as I am, I will do just fine without one. I just never saw the excitement in embracing a season of transition. I appreciate sunshine. I appreciate snow. The rest is of little consequence. I have no strong opinions one way or another.

This year I have fallen in love with all things fall. From pumpkin spice lattes, to hayrides and pumpkin patches, to cool mornings followed by bearable heated afternoons. Perhaps it was Felicity Bee’s Fall Family Challenge. I decorated my house. I surrounded myself with touches of fall. My son, my daughter, and I collected acorns and pine cones. Maybe that did it. Perhaps it was my journey to minimalism. I put away my summer garments, and I pulled out sweaters, long sleeved shirts, and boots. A few new pieces added something extra to my wardrobe and consequently my overall look and confidence.

When You've Got Nothing Left - Managing Transition in Life

The more likely culprit, though, for my most recent love affair is my current state of being. Fall perfectly represents how I feel about life right now. I am in between seasons. I am and have been living life in transition. When one part of life settles, another part kicks up a fuss. Just when routines get comfortable, a new element strolls in and creates disequilibrium (gotta love college and its fancy schmancy words).

Each day I wake up in the morning, and I am tired before it starts. Each morning, I wake up, and I pray the same prayer:

“Dear God, I’ve got nothing left.”

And I hear the line from the movie Angels in the Outfield, “You’ve got an angel with you right now.”  The line has ingrained itself in my mind.  I actually heard it over and over in a preview for one of my favorite Disney movies growing up, and from the first time I heard it, I loved it.  I loved it then.  I love it now.

A player tells the coach, “I’ve got nothing left.”  The coach responds, “You’ve got an angel with you right now.”

“You’ve got an angel with you right now.”

I have spent the last two months oversharing on my favorite social media.  I do this not because  I want the world to see how great I am, how great my life is.  Instead, I want the world to see my angels.  I want everyone to see those moments in life that meant the world to me.  I wanted to share the times God took the time to remind me He has it all in control.

A win on Friday nights against seemingly insurmountable odds.  A kid’s song stuck in my head as soon as I wake up in the morning with the lyrics, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”  An evening game of “Go Ape.”  A day off from my toughest class replaced with hearty laughter at a professional development meeting.  A glimpse at how my ordinary is extraordinary.

I leave you with three thoughts for what to do when you have got nothing left.

  1.  Remember you have an angel with you.  Sometimes those angels are friends, family, and loved ones.  Sometimes they are the miracles, coincidences, breakthroughs, and “right place at the right time” moments.  Sometimes they are the calm voice, the beautiful song you needed you cannot get out of your head, the internal whisper that everything will be all right.
  2. Be grateful.  Practice an attitude of gratitude.  Freeze those instances you wanted time to stand still.  Write them down.  Take a picture.  Do whatever you need to do to document that, “This just happened.”  Right when you needed it most.
  3. Just wake up in the morning.  Let God take it from there. When You've Got Nothing Left - Managing Transition in Life

  1. First of all, I love this post. “You have an angel watching over you” –> that just touched my heart. It’s beautiful to watch you embrace both the ups and downs of your life and I’m honored that you mentioned me in your post. I’m the lucky one to be able to impact lives like yours. 🙂

    1. Sorry it took me so long to respond to your nominations. I told you I respond just a little differently. My quote challenge was completely crazy. LOL. But I really appreciate you. And I try to catch up on all that you do. I am truly glad to have met you in this crazy blogging universe.

  2. I can’t love this enough. Fall is my favorite season, but I never thought to connect that to my mood. Fall really does represent my general personality. This is probably why I love it so – it speaks to who I am.

Thank you for this, and bless you this autumn season.

  3. Great read! You make fall sound even more beautiful with your “fancy schmancy words”. Lol!
Seriously though, I completely understand what you are saying, I was just telling someone yesterday how I just don’t really know what I am supposed to be doing right now. I feel like I am in a transition, some days I wake up already spent, sometimes I have all this energy that I don’t know what to do with ( sounds bipolar,I know).
At such times, after talking to God, I just get on the piano and play till my lids feel heavy. Can’t wait for the new season though…whew!

    1. I like the idea of losing yourself in something. I tend to do this in creating something or mindless social media surfing or even shopping from time to time. Sometimes when God asks us to “lose ourselves” in something like music as you mentioned, it’s because He’s waiting for us there.

  4. I have learned to appreciate Fall just like you, gradually! I used to be a summer gal but now I find I like the transitional periods especially since I am living in the south now. I was at my lowest point this June. My angels turned out to be my therapist and my husband and our dog. Those three people have put me back together and set me on the path I should have been on. In my heart, I believe that God had me get low so that I could see it was time to get busy and start writing again. He gave me the gift of being creative and I wasn’t using it. Thank you so much for including me in your list, Brittany! I am honored. Whenever I need a pick me up, I come here. Save me a PSL 🙂

    1. That’s so sweet of you! God works that way sometimes to get our attention. Then he sends us loved ones to pick us up. My pastor once told us about the sick man that they let through the roof. He said sometimes people let us down, and life lets us down, and situations let us down. But just recognize they let us down right at the feet of Jesus. PS I’m so ready for my Friday morning PSL and Thursday is not over!

  5. Sometimes I tell God, “If You want this all to work out, it’s going to have to be You, because I can’t do all this on my own. Then I move forward with the belief that He will make everything happen that He wants to happen, and if some part doesn’t work out, either it wasn’t His will or His timing. He reminds me of what I have to do, and leads me and guides me, literally.
Also, I believe that the “coincidences, breakthroughs, and “right place at the right time” moments… the calm voice, the beautiful song you needed you cannot get out of your head, the internal whisper that everything will be all right” are all gifts from God Himself. The voice is His, the song is His, the timing is His, the breakthrough is His, things falling into place are His gifts to us. He delights in His children who love Him and is lavish in His gracious giving!
Unfortunately, even though I recognize this, I still have to be reminded to be grateful. Sorry God.
Thank you, Mrs. Extraordinary Mom for the reminder. 🙂
    Go with God.
    May the blessings continue.
    Amen

  6. Great Read! Thanks for the reminder. So far this is my second Fall season (coming from a tropical country) and I’m still loving it because it always shows me the great colours outside despite the cold weather. It’s something I’m thankful and brightens my day that keep my spirits up in this depressing cold season.

    1. I have found that God is okay with me buying a few warm, fuzzy pieces of clothing, such as fleeces and leg warmers and scarves and nice sweat pants, that put the warmth right where I need it when there is too much chill in the air. He promises to provide all my needs, and warmth is a need when it is cold.
Last fall there was a day when I was so chilled, even though the temperature was only in the 50’s Fahrenheit, that I pulled on some leg warmers that have a thin fleece lining. After that, my blood must have gotten used to the temperature of the air, and I didn’t need the leg warmers again until mid-winter.

  7. What a wonderful post! Even though you speak of not having anything left, and feeling tired when you wake up, there’s something so uplifting about what you are saying. That everyone has an angel with them at all times is something I’m convinced of. And yes, sometimes all you need to do is wake up and let life take it from there. I think we overthink things sometimes. From time to time, we just need to live and breathe right in the moment, without thinking too much about anything else.

  8. I love the idea of sharing to show others your angels. I’m not a mom, but as a college student I can definitely feel like I have nothing left to give. Your family is beautiful and I’m looking forward to reading more!

  9. Brittany, as I was reading this post, I was musing over what a beautiful spirit you have and all the things I’d like to share with you in relation to this post. I did not expect to see Pics and Posts listed among your favorites. Nor did I expect your beautiful statement of appreciation. Thank you for that and for making my day. I thank God for you and your “ordinarily extraordinariness.” It has been sheer pleasure watching you grow and become and walk in the beauty and truth God has called you to. You are amazing and I love you too!

  10. Oh, what a lovely post! Your photos are fine too. I want to awake each morning (Lord willing) and place my life and every breath in His hands…for that day and each one following. Bless you for reminding me of precious angels all around. I think of God’s legions of angels around Jesus. I call upon them but knowing that I have at least one right with me at all times. Bless you in your days. Thankful we are neighbors at Crystal’s.

  11. Great reminders! I am one of those people that LOVES fall. I like the change you can feel and see. But even throughout all the changes, after waking up allowing God to take it from there.

  12. This was a beautiful post – not only the pictures, but also the words (and the theme, for the record). I haven’t seen Angels in the Outfield since I was, oh, gosh, like five years old, but I may have to rewatch it now. And I don’t think it’s considered an overshare if you’re inspiring and helping people with it. That’s where I draw the line, at least, although I’m also the type to get down and gritty with my life, haha.

    1. Thanks so much. I was just checking out your youtube videos as well. I have often wondered about YouTube and vlogs, but I, like you, lack focus and follow-through sometimes so words to paper and add pics I would take regardless (VIOLA). Here we are! Have a great weekend!

  13. So beautifully said! I have always loved fall. While I’ve been in the low-country of SC for 30 years, I grew up in the upstate and I have missed fall for these 30 years. Thank you for the reminder to just get up and let God. I am so good at getting in HIS way and thinking that I know better than HE. When will I ever learn? 🙂

  14. Fall is my favorite of year. I love switching to boots and sweaters and enjoying the beautiful colors that cooler weather brings in my area. I love your post, life can be overwhelming. I have an Angel too. I learned to let go and let God be in control years ago. It has removed so much stress from my life, and I am thankful. Oh, I love the mason jars.

  15. Thank you for your lovely article. Just to tell that it’s not always I am able to read and keep up with all the sites. One is I am pressed for time as I am studying. Two I get stressed. Although now I have fully recovered from depression, Bipolar does not go away like that and I have to do what ever in my own time and not stress !!!
Why I am doing my blog is to help others through my first hand experiences on how I became well and coping with what ever other issues that pops up from here and there. So I only write when I get that need to write an article. Also I read other’s articles only when I an really relaxed, so that I can read it well and either learn something from it or comment and let others know how I feel about it. Love and Light from me 🙂 ❤

    1. Thank you so much! I’ve been looking back at some of my old posts recently also. Blogging gives us the unique opportunity to really look back and remember who we were and revisit some of the plans we made, life changes we embarked upon.
